The lower River Wye, designated a Special Area of Conservation, runs through one of the densest poultry production regions in the UK. Phosphorus and nitrogen from manure feed algal blooms that change the water's color and damage the ecology the protection was meant to preserve.
The brick is built from discarded product packaging, sand from Helsinki, and green pigments. The packaging is the metaphor: every chicken leaves the system as a wrapped product, and the brick holds that wrap in the color of the river the same production pollutes.
The brick is an invitation to see the structure that produces the color: a love for cheap meat, a system that turns animals into products and the result of these systems.
